We Are Black Cowboys: The Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club

Design Studio Project, Fall 2015

The Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club is a local, traditionally black non-profit organization that mentors children and young adults in the impoverished Strawberry Mansion neighborhood of North Philadelphia by teaching riding and horse care. For decades, Fletcher Street has quietly served local youth as an outlet from the cycle of crime that has affected much of North Philadelphia – in exchange for their pledge to maintain their grades and stay out of trouble, young riders are given the opportunity to become part of a proud, storied history and form a unique bond with their horses and with each other.

We Are Black Cowboys is an exhibition that encourages visitors to explore Fletcher Street’s history and culture, challenges them to reexamine the relationships between sport, race and social status, and inspires them to create empathy and form stronger relationships within their own communities.

We Are Black Cowboys exhibition design book is available upon request.
