Beyond the Myth: Unearthing the Shang Dynasty

Graduate Museum Project, Spring 2015

Until the late 19th century, there was no physical evidence of the Shang – experts relied on stories and oral traditions passed down through the centuries to understand a dynasty they weren’t even sure existed. Only recently have we been able to gain a more complete picture of their history and culture by excavating and analyzing Shang archaeology and interpreting oracle bones and bronze inscriptions.

Beyond the Myth is an exhibition that challenges visitors to explore the question, “How do we know what we know about the Shang dynasty?” Hands-on interactives, creative storytelling, and illustrative artifacts invite visitors to develop a more complete picture of an ancient culture through the connections between archaeology, transmitted texts, and excavated texts.

The images provided represent work I created as part of an exhibition team consisting of museum design, education, and communication students– my focus was on visual identity, graphic design, and Vectorworks renderings.

Beyond the Myth exhibition design book is available upon request.
